What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic preparation of water containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol. The addition of benzyl alcohol acts as a highly effective preservative to inhibit bacterial growth, used as the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized research compounds.

Unlike standard sterile water—which must be discarded immediately after a single use—Bacteriostatic Water is engineered for extended laboratory applications.

Handling and Storage

For optimal shelf life, store Bacteriostatic Water at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F). Once a vial has been punctured for reconstitution purposes, it should be discarded after 28 days in accordance with standard laboratory operating procedures (SOPs).

Does it need to be refrigerated after opening?

Refrigeration is not required. BAC Water is highly stable at room temperature both before and after opening. However, storing it in the refrigerator alongside reconstituted peptides is acceptable, provided the solution is never frozen. Regardless of whether it is stored at room temperature or in a refrigerator, once a vial has been punctured, it must be discarded after 28 days in accordance with standard laboratory operating procedures (SOPs).
